Integrin activation pmanet ilwu4/26/2023 The essential roles of integrins in cell development and tissue organization, as well as their potential as therapeutic targets, are now well established. Integrins are unusual in their ability to respond both to extracellular and intracellular stimuli, thus signaling bidirectionally across the membrane. Integrins ( Box 1) are the major cell surface receptors used to assemble and recognize a functional ECM and to facilitate cell migration to the correct tissue location. Cells create those environments by laying down extracellular matrix (ECM) components to support the development of various tissue types. The diverse characteristics of tissues in multicellular organisms arise from specific interactions between cells and their environment.
